AMC3 2008

Welcome to the inaugural year of the Appellate Moot Court Collegiate Challenge.

This is the launch of a groundbreaking program that fills a gap between moot court in law school and successful mock trial programs for high school and college students. Participation is limited to undergraduates.

Because it's the first year, we are suspending the requirement for teams to file a brief in advance of the competition. We expect to add that to the competition in 2009.

Highlights of the plan:

  • Teams will presumably have four members each, but the rules allow for teams to have two to five members.
  • Each attorney will also sit on the bench for at least one hearing, asking questions of the teams arguing the case in that round.
  • Teams will be able to watch each other's arguments. [In law school, teams argue in private so they can't gain competitive advantage from seeing future opponents.] In the first year, we are trying to promote cross-pollination of skills and ideas. This policy will be reviewed after the first year.
  • A Jury of Review, which includes lawyers, faculty and college administrators, will provide feedback to each team after each round. The best teams and lawyers will also win awards.
  • The competition will consist of three rounds; the scores from the two best rounds count toward the championship. Each team will argue once on the first afternoon so that all teams have the same opportunity to adjust their strategies overnight.

The Case and State Authorities is a large file with all of the required materials in PDF format when it's unzipped. We will post it as several smaller files upon request.

TISL and its AMC3 partners are committed to developing a high-quality program that provides new opportunities to undergraduates interested in the law. In combination with the Tennessee Intercollegiate Supreme Court, students have a chance to learn about and experiencepreviously inaccessible parts of the judicial system.

We welcome suggestions and participation.
